Project Description
In India monsoon rains are recurrent and widespread. Despite this, there are no plans to quickly secure families and prevent storms from causing damage and death. In poor areas, a monsoon puts the lives of many at risk.
Monsoons are so widespread in India that thousands of people die every year.
Thousands of surviving women and girls do later fall ill. The project goal is to help communities prepare for a natural disaster. The first suffering are children, the most vulnerable and least prepared to respond adequately to all the difficulties arisen in such a harsh situation. It is not just a matter of security, but a health and food matter as well. When a climatic event hits an area, children malnutrition increases and serious illnesses spread immediately.
76.226 Assisted children and people
The prevention and response project to natural disasters finds its own application in two Indian areas: in the state of Orissa, one in Assam and one in West Bengal. It will support about 76226 people, mostly children.
Communities involved in risk management plans
To spread awareness among population and help it face the problem immediately and autonomously, the project consists of 3 parts:
1. Involve communities in the planning and implementation of activities that help reduce risks, giving a great deal of attention to those risks concerning children
2. Promote school risk management plans developed with the collaboration of children, as school is the main place to spread such knowledges
3. Focus on local authorities, increase their awareness and knowledge on risk management models focused on childhood and on the specific needs of children in an emergency
A community that knows how to defend the weakest in the most difficult situations is the best community.
